ABOUT YUSUF KALYANGO
ACADEMICS AND SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Yusuf Kalyango is a media scholar, a proud father of Ragan and Isaac, an author and full Professor. He has a strong academic background and was trained by prominent scholars in the United States. He holds a Ph.D. from the Missouri School of Journalism, where he completed his doctoral dissertation under Professor Wayne Wanta (who is now at the University of Florida) and Professor Stephanie Craft; he studied under conflicts expert Professor Len Riskin (currently at University of Florida Law School) and Margeret M. McGuinness; and conducted research with renowned comparative politics expert, Professor Patrick James at University of Southern California) and Professor Minion K.C. Morrison (from Mississippi State University). His doctoral dissertation extended the agenda-setting and agenda-building research to Africa to understand: how the media influence East Africans to make sense of politics and the rule of law; how the media or the East African Community states influence citizens to decide what is important in their lives; and how citizens evaluate media performance and regime legitimacy during the continent’s most recent wave of democratization. He was full tenured Professor for 13 years in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. He specializes in international comparative political communication and social media effects as well as diversity and mediated diplomacy. His scholarship centers on peace and conflict resolution, democratization and the rule of law. |

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Professor Kalyango joined the faculty of Ohio University in the fall of 2008 and ended his relationship with the university in 2021. He taught foreign correspondence, broadcast news seminar, media and conflicts, international mass media systems, specialized journalism dealing with global mediated diplomacy and diversity, and some graduate research courses. His previous teaching experience includes being an assistant professor of journalism at Lincoln University, where he taught media management, mass media law, global media and diversity, media and law, and broadcast reporting and writing. He was also an instructor at the University of Missouri, where he taught broadcast journalism, international issues reporting, and cross-cultural journalism. He's served as Visiting Professor in Asia, Africa and South America.

Professor Kalyango administered an annual journalism study abroad program; headed numerous programs funded by a U.S. Department of State grant called the Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) on Journalism and Media, which raised millions of dollars at OU; and handles other international cooperative programs with media advocacy institutions.

RESEARCH
Professor Kalyango’s research focus centers on comparative political communication, international public opinion on media performance, and media and democratization. He has authored 50 refereed journal articles and several book chapters between 2007 and 2021, as well as more than 50 refereed conference papers presented at AEJMC, ICA, APSA, ASA and IAMCR in the same period of research productivity. His recent work has appeared in the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Communication Yearbook #34, Journalism: Theory, Practice & Criticism, Journal of Radio and Audio Media, African Journalism Studies, Journalism Studies, and International Mass Communication in a Global Age. His scholarly work has won numerous AEJMC and ICA research awards.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Worked for 13 years in radio, a newspaper, and television stations in East Africa and the U.S. At those places, he spent time as a political reporter, a television news producer, a news editor, a news director and the head of news and current affairs. He was an East Africa contributor for CNN International’s Inside Africa from 2000 to 2002 and for CNN World Report from1997 to 2001. He received several awards in East Africa; two international awards for journalism excellence in CNN World Report in Atlanta in 2000; and an award from the African Journalism Foundation in 1997 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

So far, the University of Namibia and the University of Myanmar have requested my services. • Vice Chair: University International Council (UIC) -- Ohio University’s Standing Committee • Chair: International Travel Fund (ITF) committee -- Ohio University’s ITF supports Group I and II faculty’s international research, paper presentation and other international scholarly activities. • Member: University International Council (UIC) -- Ohio University Standing Committee. Three-year renewable term: 2011 to 2014; appointed by the president of the university. • Member: Global Health Task Force -- The task force brings together experts with international experience and global health related interests as well as representatives of various units and departments from across the university to pursue grants and other international projects for the university. • Member: African Studies Program -- Member of the faculty board of the African Studies Program and a faculty member on the War and Peace Studies Certificate Program. • Member: Scripps Innovation Committee -- The committee’s task is proposing projects to invest some of the college’s innovation fund from the Scripps Foundation. Part of the mission is to improve the visibility of the college as a national played in innovation. • Member: Advisory Committee for the Scripps Innovation Challenge • Member: Scripps International Committee -- The committee’s job is to document Scripps College International activities; enhance revenue through grants and other activities, and coordinate international linkages for the college. |
